A common question I get when I tell people that I am married to a firefighter is...
”Oh my gosh does he have any single firefighter friends?”
Though I find this super funny, I do realize that this is a real stereotype. Firefighters are perceived as hot, sexy and romantic, waiting to whisk us off our feet. The hero rushing in to take care of our every need. I laugh even as I write this because the reality is way different than the fantasy.
Or is it...
In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I think that there is some truth to it. The role of a firefighter is to take care of people in emergency situations. That is heroic. They are the ones running in when everyone else is running out.
The selflessness that they exert when they are on shift doesn’t just go away when they leave the firehouse. The work they do for their side job has that same altruism. Many firefighters have such unique and interesting side jobs! This is one of the reasons why I wanted to highlight what firefighters do when they aren’t saving lives.
If you need someone to build a deck in your back yard or an accountant for your taxes. I’m pretty sure you can find a firefighter who is doing just that on their days off and would welcome the opportunity to work for you!
